We were made by God to bring Him glory (Isaiah 43:7), and Scripture commands us to bring Him glory in everything we do (1 Cor 10:31). But how can we bring glory to God? Well, Jesus tells His disciples, "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit" (John 15:8). This means that we can fulfill the purpose for which we were made if we produce fruit. But we must understand that we cannot bear fruit on our own. Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I am him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).
Although we are responsible to bear fruit, we are incapable on producing fruit ourselves. So what is the key to producing fruit that brings glory to God? Jesus tells us twice in John 15. In verse 7 He says, "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." Again in verse 16 Jesus says, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you."
Jesus makes it plain that we should ask for what we lack. And when it comes to producing fruit, we are completely insufficient. Since fruit-bearing glorifies God, and since we are incapable of producing fruit on our own, we must ask God to make us fruitful. We cannot possibly glorify God apart from prayer.
Do you really believe that? Do you believe that your life is completely ineffective without prayer? Do you believe that our church is powerless if its people are not diligent in prayer? Do you believe that God cannot be glorified by our lives if we are not desperately begging Him to produce spiritual fruit in us? A praying church is a fruitful church, regardless of its size and programs. A busy church that neglects prayer, however, is a dying church. An active, growing church that neglects prayer is really a fruitless church. If a group of people are diligently serving, giving, and worshipping, but not praying; they are fooling themselves. True lasting fruit is only produced by Christ through the means of prayer. God will never be glorified by a person or church that is not devoted to prayer.
