I'm not a coffee drinker, but I do enjoy a cup of hot tea on a cold day. There is a lesson that we can learn from a tea bag. The tea will remain in the bag for months and even years. It may even be a mystery as to what kind of tea is in the bag. But if you put the tea bag into hot water, the contents on the inside will come out. The color and flavor of the tea are immediately drawn out by the hot water.
The same is true for people. The character of a person may be a mystery to others for a long time, but the pressure of "hot water" will expose what is really on the inside. A church member may plan his words and actions very carefully when he is around other Christians. He makes sure to have proper behavior and present a righteous image. But what happens when that person is placed into an uncomfortable situation? What happens under stress and pressure? What happens when "hot water" is poured over him? The contents of the inside come out.
Have you ever heard someone make an excuse for exploding in anger? He says, "That wasn't like me. I'm not usually that way." But the truth is that our spontaneous, unplanned, unscheduled reactions reveal exactly who we are. A person cannot react contrary to his character. What comes out is exactly who we are.
Jesus talked about the human heart with these words: "It is what comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man." (Mark 7:20-23)
So don't make excuses to what comes out of your heart. Your words and behavior may be ugly sometimes. Instead of blaming other people or your difficult situation, confess your sin to God. Ask Him to change your heart as you fill your heart with His Word (Rom 12:2). By God's grace we will produce the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) next time we find ourselves in "hot water."
